“If this happened every day then it wouldn’t be so special.”

I put another bit of pineapple to her mouth and watched her chew as I ate some strawberries.

“I couldn’t get enough fresh fruit when I got out. It’s a delicacy in prison, that’s for damn sure.”

“The warden halved her orange with me a couple of weeks ago. That shit was so good.”

“You and the warden shared food? I don’t think I ever spoke to the warden when I was inside. Damn sure didn’t hang out and share our snacks.”

“I had actually never had a conversation with her until the day she told me my release date. She was very nice to me. We had a mutual acquaintance and discussed it.”

“Really? After ten years you guys realized you had something in common?”

“No. She knew the whole time but couldn’t say anything. She took a risk telling me even there at the end. I had been working in the office with her for years by then, so I guess she could see that I was trustworthy.”

“What friend did you two have in common?”

“The man that killed her Aunt and Uncle. He was the same man that killed my whole family.”

“Oh, fuck.” I felt myself tense under her, but she didn’t move. “I’m sorry, baby. I didn’t realize your family was all gone.”

“Yeah. He killed them all in our house while I was out with friends having a late birthday dinner with my friends.”

“Oh, shit. How did you find out?” I had my fingers crossed she wouldn’t tell me that she had found her family dead. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy.

“I came home as he was stabbing my Auntie. She was the last one.”

I dropped the piece of pineapple back onto the tray and wrapped my arms around Terra. I sat my chin on her shoulder and thought about it for a second.

It was three days past her sixteenth birthday when she was arrested. She was coming home from a birthday dinner when she found her family all dead in their home. Holy shit.

“You killed him?”

“We said we weren’t going to talk about this.” I felt her tense in my arms and try and move away. I only held her closer.

“How did you go to prison for that. Wasn’t it self-defense? Or home defense? Or heat of the moment?”

“I didn’t do it quickly. It took a while.” She still wasn’t relaxed against me. “A few hours. My lawyer said that’s why the judge added to the jury’s sentence. I didn’t have any remorse for what I had done.”

“Good for you, sweetheart. Fucking bastard deserved whatever you dished out.”

Terra turned her head to look at my face.

“Are you serious?”

“Well, yeah. Some people just need killin’.” I shrugged and kissed her neck. If she was looking for someone to be outraged about killing some piece of shit who didn’t deserve to live, then she just joined the wrong fucking family. My thought made me chuckle a little bit.

“What’s funny?”

“Jesus, my family is going to love you.
